Add .RTF to ‘New’ Context Menu in Windows 7/10

  • Be Logged in as an Administrator
  • Open a file explorer window & type %SystemRoot% & hit enter (or browse to C:/Windows)
  • Create a New Folder named: ShellNew
  • Open Wordpad.exe  – in Start Menu>All Programs>Accessories, or Run > Wordpad
  • Hit Save & Save the Blank Document to your Desktop as “Document.rtf”
  • Copy that Document.rtf and paste it into your new System Folder: %SystemRoot%/ShellNew
    (Windows>ShellNew)
  • Click Yes to Provide Administrator Permissions when prompted to do so
  • Right-Click on your Desktop, go to New>Text Document
  • Double-click to Open it
  • Paste in the following text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtf\Word.RTF.8\ShellNew]
“filename”=”Document.rtf”

  • Save & Close it
  • Rename it AddRTF.reg (no .txt extension – be sure you’ve disabled “hide extensions for known file types” in Tools > Folder Options > View)
  • Double-Click AddRTF.reg and select yes to any prompts to add the registry changes

You can now right-click any location and go to New > Rich Text Format, to create a new .rtf document in that location
