4-Strand Braided Bracelets

Preparation:

  • If using 1 or 2 colors, select 2 long strands about 8 to 10 times as long as your intended bracelet
    • Fold them in half
    • Tie a knot in the folded end with both strands at the same time so they make a loop
    • if you wish to make an adjustable bracelet, choose 4 strands about 4 or 5 times longer than your intended bracelet
      • Tie a knot in the end with all 4 strands at the same time
      • Leave about 6-10 cm extra on the end
    • if using 3 or 4 colors, select 4 strands about 4 or 5 times longer than your intended bracelet
      • Tie a knot in the end with all 4 strands at the same time
      • Leave about 6-10 cm extra on the end
    • Begin by holding the knot between the thumb and index finger of your left hand
    • Choose one color you like and lay it on your hand between your thumb and fore-finger, towards your left, adjust the knot accordingly, so its facing the same position as your primary string
    • Put one color over your thumb, towards your body
    • Put the other two strings over your index finger, facing away from you

Braiding:

  • Take the string laying left between your thumb and forefinger and lay it straight over the knot so its now facing right, leave a little space for a loop and pinch it between your thumb and forefinger
  • Working Counter-Clockwise, take the string in front of you facing your body, hanging over your thumb, and lay it around the right and between the two strings hanging over your index finger
  • Continue by taking the first string on your index finger, the right-most string, and lay it to the left, over both strings, so its now the left-most string
  • Take what is now the middle string, (the string which was originally the left-most string when we began the cycle, which should now have the string which was originally facing right, laying over it) and feed it up and though the loop you made with the first string, threading it towards your body
  • Pull the string all the way through, then pull the other strings one by one
  • Put the original first string into your mouth, and pull the two side strings tight, and use your middle and ring fingers to pull the opposite string from your mouth away from your body tightly
  • Adjust each string with your fingernail by sliding it snugly towards the center
  • Place string one in the original position and repeat the entire cycle until you have it as long as you like it

Finishing:

  • One Size
    • Tie the strings through the loop at the smallest possible size you can still fit your hand through
  • Adjustable Size
    • Take Two Strands from each end and Tie them off with double knots so each end is firmly tied down
    • Take the other Two strands from each end and tie them around the opposing ends two strands, so the opposing ends strands can slide through the knot
    • Do the same with the opposite end
    • Tie the ends so that when wide open the hand ca fit snugly through the bracelet, and when drawn closed the bracelet is tight fitting to your wrist
    • Trim the ends of all threads, burn the ends down to the knot and smash the melted string onto the knots to secure them
