Adding Control Panel, System Tools, Administrative Tools, & More to Quick Launch

A follow up to my blog about making an Expandable and Categorized Quick Launch,

Here’s how to add Control Panel, Admin Tools and System Tools

Adding Control Panel to Quick Launch:

  • Open My Computer
  • Double-Click on Control Panel
  • Select all
  • Right-Click, select “Create Shortcut”
  • Click “Yes” to place them on the desktop
  • Ctrl+Click all the shortcuts on the desktop to highlight them all
  • then hit Ctrl+X to cut all shortcuts to clipboard
  • right Click on Quick Launch and hit “Open Folder”
  • Create a New Folder
  • name it “Control Panel”, & Open It
  • Paste all of the shortcuts into the folder
  • Go up one level, and right click on that folder you created, click “Properties”
  • Click “Customize”, and click on “Change Icon” in Icon View at the bottom
  • choose the Control Panel Icon in the list that is displayed, and click OK

Adding Administrative Tools to Quick Launch:

  • Right-Click the Start Menu, click “Properties”
  • Click “Customize”
  • Click the “Advanced” Tab
  • Scroll down to “System Administrative Tools”
  • Select “Display on the All Programs Menu and the Start Menu”
  • Hit OK, OK, to close
  • Click on the start Menu
  • Right-Click “Administrative Tools” and click “Open”
  • Highlight all of the shortcuts in the folder
  • Ctrl+C to Copy them
  • Paste them in the Quick Launch Folder the same as you did for the Control Panel, and customize the icon view of the folder as you did also

Adding System Tools & More to Quick Launch:

  • Create a New Folder in Quick Launch as you did before and name it “System Tools”
  • Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and find each of the following files and highlight them
  • Right-Click them, and Create a Shortcut for them
  • Cut and paste these into the folder you created for them in Quick Launch:
  • You can also rename them if you like, to make them easier to read and remember
    • charmap.exe – Character Map
    • cleanmgr.exe – Disk Cleanup
    • clipbrd.exe – Clip-Board
    • cmd.exe – Command Prompt
    • eudcedit.exe – Private Character Editor
    • mplay32.exe – Media Player 32
    • MRT.exe – Malicious Software Removal Tool
    • mspaint.exe – Painter
    • ntbackup.exe – Backup Utility
    • osk.exe – On-Screen Keyboard
    • regedt32.exe – Registry Editor
    • sndrec32.exe – Sound Recorder
    • sndvol32.exe – Sound Volume
    • syncapp.exe – Synchronized Briefcase
    • TweakUI.exe – Tweak UI
    • defrag.msc – Disk Defragment
    • diskmgmt.msc – Disk Management
  • Get the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard From C:\WINDOWS\system32\usmt\migwiz.exe – Create a Shortcut
  • Get the System Restore from C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore\rstrui.exe – Create a
    Shortcut

** Save a copy of the entire Quick Launch folder to a safe location for future use
